Upload GPS waypoints and routes and Grid References for Round Rotherham to a Garmin device using Base Camp software
Under development - does not work yet!
See preamble about the up-to-dateness of data files on the parent GPS page.
10 figure grid references are given for the GPS system.
There are 2 ways of doing this. Download the route file or pick up the route from the computer
Method A) First, download the .gpx file (right click, Save Link As... (or similar) and save to a location you can find.
Next, (if you do not have it) you need to download and install the BaseCamp software from the Garmin site (if first link fails - look for software under Maps & Accesories)
Open BaseCamp
File-Import into My Collection - select the .gpx file you downloaded. Waypoints should appear under My Collection, and the file name rrr_gps_map_gpx.gpx should be listed under My Collection (top left).
Click on the file name rrr_gps_map_gpx.gpx
Now connect your device to a USB port and switch it on. It should be recognised.
Select Device - Send to Device - Click Send 'rrr_gps_map_gpx.gpx' to Device - click on device name, OK and wait for the transfer to complete.
You will get all the waypoints, 9 routes (stage 1 is split into 2 sections) and a truncated version of the route, the first 500 points. (For 2014, I will seek to edit the track so that 500 points gets close to the finish)
Somehow, I managed to import the .gpx file into BaseCamp. If you manage that, you can export the .gpx file to your Garmin (hand held); for the Forerunner, you (probably) have to export the adventure
Warning: if you have downloaded other data to BaseCamp, you may find your other activities incorporated into the adventure!
Method B) Alternatively, Download, install and open BaseCamp, as described.
Click Find - Find Garmin Adventures
A dialogue box opens. Enter "henry m" (without quotes) in Published By box. The RR should appear in the box below. Click on it, then click Download, and it should appear in the Garmin Adventures list. If the Adventure does not appear, try centering the BaseCamp map on Rotherham, distance over 75 km, time over 15 hours (displayed time may be 43 hours, due to track edits!)
You may get a message about your device not recognising geotagged pictures - ignore and wait while file downloads.
Write the route to your device following instructions from # under A) above.
Now connect your device to a USB port and switch it on. It should be recognised.
Select Device - Send to Device - Click Send RR adventure to Device - click on device name, OK and wait for the transfer to complete.
You will get all the waypoints, 9 routes (stage 1 is split into 2 sections) and a truncated version of the route, the first 500 points. (For 2014, I will seek to edit the track so that 500 points gets close to the finish)
Note: in this case, the route will be converted to a track, according to the Garmin documentation, maybe not ideal. In a Route, waypoints are linked by straight lines. The track follows the twists and turns, at (for me) 18 second intervals. Accordingly, I recommend method A, as with method B you end up with 2 versions of the same thing (the route) and no track. Also, in this version waypoints seem to be duplicated, to be corrected.
