What is Orienteering? - from the British Orienteering Federation (BOF)

Get a flavour if the sport by watching an extract from the British Orienteering Federation DVD

Also the US orienteering federation video, in four sections.
'Play' is the right pointing triangle below and on the left of the video
screen (bottom toolbar of the video)
Better seen on YouTube with a larger picture, and also offers a number of 'related' orienteering videos

Local events (in or near South Yorkshire) See Events page on the SYO website www.southyorkshireorienteers.org.uk.

Come and try orienteering or improve your basic skills at South Yorkshire Orienteer's informal Saturday morning events

These events are designed specifically for newcomers to the sport, families and those who have done some orienteering but who would like to improve in an unpressurised environment.

Complete up-to-date listings of Orienteering events are listed on the British Orienteering website.  You can locate nearby events using a Postcode search

Other SYO events early in 2011 see website for further details:

DVO (Derwent Valley Orienteers), the Derbyshire club, and NOC (Nottinghamshire) also have some informal events close to Rotherham

Don’t forget anyone can come to any of our events you don’t have to be a member – but we hope you might want to join after a few goes at it. ”

British Champion 2002

On the run in (picture from CompassSport)

(Age Group Champion in the past, running for SYO)

He lost most of the 2001 season because of a broken arm.  In 2002, his training was rewarded by winning the British Championships. Calm nerves were needed; as he went through the Spectator Control he heard the commentator announce "Dan Marston is in the lead". Somewhat distracting, but he kept his nerve to win by 2 minutes!

On Saturday 18th August 2001 I was listening to an interview with a couple involved in Enigma Code-Breaking during the Second World War and was surprised when I realised that the couple were SYO retired stalwarts Shiela and Oliver Lawn.
