Name spellings, affiliations etc in the archive and the linked results listings available from this page are based on the web start list.  In general, the archive uses the spelling first used by a participant, unless the name change is permanent (as when a lady marries), to avoid risk of confusion between people with similar names, e.g. Steve Walker, Steven Walker and Stephen Walker, and doppelgangers (e.g. the two Stephen Walker's who have appeared).    Please let me know if you are aware of any errors, to RRRresults

Well, what a day.  Plenty of rain beforehand, then rain from the first start right through the day, although those who were out into the evening will have noticed it it eased off.  Anyone without good rain gear will have soon found it difficult to maintain body heat.  Even my supposedly waterproof GPS unit succumbed - the rain wasn't that heavy, but it was persistent. One benefit of there being surface water was that the mud of the ploughed fields didn't stick to the shoes, so we weren't having to try to run with size 24 mud balls.  The overall non-finish rate was 31%, compared with 22% last year.  That's after 64 people decided not to start, in a number of cases presumably having seen the weather forecast and deciding the Christmas shopping looked a better option.  20% non-starters is an abnormally high figure.  Most likely to drop out were those who'd done it a few times, knew what they were in for and decided to call it a day.  For those new to the event, don't be put off.  2009 is a new year, conditions can't be worse (can they?), so be brave and give it another go.  Conditions should be better (less dark at least) with new date of 17th October

For what its worth, the retirement analysis:

Previous Number of Completions Finished Retired % did not finish
0 95 42 31%
1 28 11 28%
2 10 7 41%
3 6 5 45%
4 5 2 29%
5 3 1 25%
6 5 0 0%
7 2 1 33%
8 6 2 25%
9 2 1 33%
10 or more 10 1 9%

The comparable figures for 2007 (overall 22% retired) are:

0 117 29 20%
1 27 5 16%
2 16 3 16%
3 8 1 11%
4 3 2 40%
5 7 1 13%
6 3 0 0%
7 10 1 9%
8 4 0 0%
9 2 2 50%
10 or more 12 1 8%

What the papers said: Rotherham Advertiser and Athletics Weekly  -

10-completions Award

In line with a tradition in LDWA events, an award has been introduced for completing the event 10 times. Awards have been made to Roy Varo, Henry Marston, Dave Carratt, Kerry Booth, Mick Cochrane, George Kay, Terry Griffiths, Andrew West, Chris Sanders, David Fox, Mick Marsters, Brian Harney, Ian O'Mara, Tom Hughes, Bob Berzins, Peter Simpson, Percy Wellor, Martin Gaynor, Barry Harrison, David Keward, Michael Collins, Kevin Uzzell, Malcolm Coles, Philip Gwilliam and John Cunnane.  The awards are based on my records; please let me know if there is an error (contact information below). Names get spelled differently in different years (Steve or Stephen), ladies marry, and certain names have been duplicated, easy when there were two Nigel Robinsons in one year, more difficult when there were John Whites in different years, from different clubs (which is not decisive) but different DOB (which usually is).

Additional awards were made this year to Philip Elliot and Alan Yates.

That's a total of 27.

20-completions Award

Roy Varo was the first to be presented an award for reaching 20 completions.  Henry Marston joined the band this year.

Retirements are included with main results
